God’s Intention for Mankind
Marriage is ordained by God. God intends marriage to be a lifelong commitment. It is matrimonial covenant where a man and a woman establish a relationship to live together in partnership and help each other. The spouses are supposed to live in happiness & contentment. By nature the spouses procreates and are supposed to raise the children in the fear and respect of God. This results to an entity refers to as a family.
God’s authority over marriage.
God created a man (Adam) first and gave him authority over all His creation, and then He created a woman (Eve) to be a helper of a man.
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife and they shall become one flesh,” (Gen 2:24 ESV).
The above verse sets forth God’s intended institution of marriage; i.e. one man is supposed to unite with one woman in matrimony and they become one-a family. It also sets forth a platform for sexual union between the spouses which later leads to procreation of their offspring.
” Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over all creation.” (Gen 1: 28).
Changes in God’s original idea of marriage.
Today civil laws have been enacted to regulate marriage. It’s important to note that civil laws still incorporate most of the biblical teachings and elements of the marriage institution. The regulations enacted give an opportunity for non-believers to enjoy the institution of marriage as God intended.
The civil laws try to strengthen the institution of marriage through various ways which include:
- Legal protection for children who result in the marriages.
- Legal security for the spouses involved.
- Public celebration and acknowledgement of the marriage.
The problem arises because such marriage arrangements alters or undermines the original intention of God towards marriage.
Civil laws have altered several elements in marriage and the most notable one include;
- Legitimately allowing of same-sex marriage.
The rights of same-sex spouses have been advocated for in the recent years and in some countries considerations have been taken to constitutionally accept such arrangements and hence such spouses can marry and enjoy full benefits of marriage.
- Acceptable of divorce.
Civil laws have allowed spouses who lack satisfaction in marriage to be able to legitimately severe them and enter into new or better one. This is as a result of the laws trying to safeguard the rights of freedoms of individuals. Marriage has therefore been transformed from a Godly covenant to a simple partnership contract.
This is a contrast with the Bible. Ideally, spiritual marriage is not based on the interests or conventions or agreements of human rights. The bible sets marriage as divine and the resulting family entity as God’s plan for the world. This makes marriage a God’s covenant. This means that spouses have no room to redefine marriage accordingly to their interest or personal beliefs; instead they should respect and preserve it as instituted by God.
