Spiritual Teaching on Divorce and Remarriage.
There is a belief that happy marriages are seen or mostly occur in a situation whereby spouses specialize in gender typical roles and are focused and attentive to needs to be accomplished by each spouse. (e.g. divorces are rare in marriages whereby the woman accepts the role of child-bearing & caring and the husband concentrates on bread-winning.)
Fracture in Marriages
The world has changed to a great extent. In most countries people have got access to education than they did a century ago. Because of the great awareness, people now know their civil rights and freedoms.
The problem now arises when those rights or freedoms are used to justify grounds for divorce. For instance, there are many cases of divorce whereby the grounds yielding to divorce are lack of compatibility, differences in careers, decrease in love or differences in social, economic and political beliefs & inclinations.
This poses a great danger to the children involved and more to the institution of marriage.
Remarriages are also common when such person who divorces on above grounds, go forth looking for a perfect mate to fill the gap or satisfy their personal tastes.
There are some situations whereby a person may divorce and remarry more than once and such situations are on the rise. This is not only alarming to God‘s original intention of marriage and the family unit but leads to poor state of the family especially the children who are involved in such situations.
Biblical justification of divorce.
Biblical Grounds for Divorce
The bible/Christian community has cases whereby divorce is justified. Otherwise God original intention is for marriages to be a life time commitment,
“till death do as a part”.
“in sick or god health”
“I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “because the man who divorces his wife covers his garment with violence,”
God intends to preserve human race and specifically the today society and also posterity through preservation of marriages.
That’s why marriage is ordained by God. This means that God helps sustain marriages by bringing understanding, happiness and fulfillment of necessities among the married spouses. It also interprets that God will help in the reconciliation of spouses who are facing difficulties or here estranged.
The Bible is clear on divorce with only two grounds that a marriage can be annulled and the parties involved given a green-light to remarry.
Adultery. When adultery is committed day a spouse, then divorce is allowed.
The second ground is explained by Saint Paul in 1 Corinthians 7:15. It explains that a party to marriage can divorce and remarry in the event that an unbelieving spouse leaves a believer. This can be interpreted to situations whereby a spouse torments or tortures his/her partner e.g. wife battery. This harassing could range to physical to mental abuses.
